BB cup race to sealed unit?

I realise this may seem either a basic or a very stupid question, but I have tried searching the internet for the answer and I am just getting more confused.

Basically... is it possible to remove the older more basic cone and cup bearings and replce them with a sealed unit type? This for example....

There you go... nothing else to ask really.

Oh yeah. I usually discourage people from spending money to upgrade their components but this is an exception. Just make sure that you get a BB that's the right shell width and spindle length.

ABSOLUTELY!! I usually resist change , mainly because I don't like chucking stuff out that still has life in it (I used free-wheels and screw-on hubs for years after everyone swapped to cassettes), but I can't believe I stuffed around with cup & cone bottom brackets for so long.

Cartridges are SO MUCH better!

Definitley a worthwhile use of money. For around $26 you can get an Xt quality BB that'll last YEARS.

It can be done - but one word of caution - on my current project I had to grind out a little interference in the center of my bottom bracket shell to get my new sealed unit to go in, but it fits now.

Thanks a lot everyone, now I know it can be done I shall certainly do it. This is the one job I find problematic doing myself, and it is more of a chore than a labour of love!
