campag 8/9/10 compatibility?

If a hub is campagnolo 8/9 speed compatible, does that mean that it will also work with campagnolo 10 speed cassettes? I've seen people describe a campag freehub as 8/9 and also as 9/10 so could they just be referred to as 8/9/10?

(i know this is obvious but please don't tell me to search the forums)

thanks.

I am surprised no one has replied to this. Campagnolo made an eight speed hub that was an eight speed hub only. Their nine speed is splined the same as their ten speed.

OK. so i got the information elsewhere, and i think this needs some clarification.

calling a campagnolo-compatible freehub 8/9 speed is wrong, because like you just said they made an 8-speed hub that was 8-speed only and their 9/10 speed cassettes both use the same freehub body.
so there is no campagnolo 8/9 freehub because their 8 and 9-speed cassettes require different sized freehub bodies.

i think the cause for confusion is that shimano, on the other hand, is the opposite.
their 8/9 speed hubs are compatible with 8 and 9 speed cassettes and their 10 speed is something totally different, compatible only with their 10 speed cassettes

so while there are many confusing ebay listings out there, listing things as "campy 8/9 spd", here are the classifications as i understand it:

Campy
* 8 speed or
* 9/10 speed

Shimano
* 8/9 speed or
* 10 speed

Incorrect on the Shimano. Their freehubs are compatible across 8,9 and 10 speeds, except that some 10 speed cassettes have deeper splines to run on the Al freehub bodies that Dura Ace and Ultegra wheelsets use.

I had the same problem. You can't use a 9 sp cassette on a 8 sp hub. You can use Wheels Mfg spacers and add an extra 8 sp cog to get 9 but it won't swap out on a real 9/10 hub.

I just wound up going to 10 sp on my Campy bikes to avoid the hassle. That's why you see all my 8 sp parts for sale. They aren't compatible with current parts.

Almost correct.

All Shimano 10-speed cassettes have the deeper splines so they will work on the new 10-speed Aluminum Dura Ace hubs and the Ultegra hubs used on Shimano's pre-built wheels. These particular freehub bodies are too large in diameter to accept 8 or 9-speed cassettes.

All former 8 and 9-speed Shimano freehub bodies (maybe 8-speed Dura Ace is different, not sure) will accept all Shimano 10-speed cassettes. All other 10-speed Shimano hubs (except the two above) will accept 8,9 or 10-speed cassettes

Look up the Branfordbike.com for compatibility issues on Campy as well as Sheldon's site. There is a listing of conversions possible as well. It is possible to convert Ergo shifters from 8 to 9 spd and 9 to 10 with the changing of a relatively inexpensive part. I have done it for my different bikes. I know there is a narrow window for the hubs where it is possible to change out the freehub from 8 to a 9/10 speed hub and it has to do with the axel size.

Campy 8 speed hubs only take 8 speed cassettes. There was also an 8 speed record Ti spline that only took special cassettes that are no longer in production.

Current hubs are 9/10. They only take 9 or 10 speed cassettes. However, you can purchase a 9 speed cassette and a 8 speed spacer kit and use it for an 8 speed drive train. The spacers are bigger and obviously you would take out a cog.

So far, you have gotten a lot of good answers. What exactly are you building? What parts to you have and what are you looking to still get? You could get better answers if you laid out the entire build question. Good luck
