Will Older Race Face cranks work w/ 9 speed group?

I am building up a MTB for a friend and found a nice older Raceface crankset online. He is on a tight budget. Not sure if the older square taper BB and crankset preceed 9 speed and are only for 7/8 speed.. I have included a pic below..

Any input is appreciated...

Not so familiar with mountain bikes, but people upgrade road bike rears to 9 and 10 speed without changing cranks and it all works fine. You will need to get a narrower chain.
