possible axle problem?

hi there - i have a problem with my gear shifting on my 9speed rear cassette. everything was working fine until i took the bike in to a shop to have the rear wheel bearings replaced, when i got the bike back i had problems finding the right gear.

when I change, the chain will skip gears and other times will not change at all. i cant seem to fix this by adjusting the cable tension and i can get into 1st and 9th so its not the limiters.

the reason I wondered whether it was an axle problem is that the cassette oscilates slightly when the wheel is in motion - what could cause this? could this movement be messing up my gear changes by making it hard for the chain to settle on the right sprocket. How can i fix this?

hope someone can help

thanks
Barney

The small wobbling of the cassette is normal. I doubt it is causing your problem. It sure sounds like a cable tension adjustment. Other than that, check that your shift cable is running freely, especially through the housing from the chain stay to the derailler.

Two possible shop-caused errors occur to me.

First, the shop didn't reinstall the freehub body (I assume it's a Shimano) properly by not tightening the hollow fixing bolt tight enough. That could be the cause of your cassette wobble too.

Second, someone in the shop either replaced a hub/axle spacer on the wrong side or left one out so the entire hub has shifted slightly to one side.

If it's 10 speed they may have forgotten to replace the 1mm spacer behind the cassette. I've seen this
before and it causes the symptons you describe.

Good point but the OP states it's a 9-speed.
