Shimano R4550 compact crank bottom bracket

Does anyone know whether the new, Tiagra-level Shimano R4550 compact crank works with the older, octalink bottom brackets or whether it requires the new Shimano external bottom bracket cups? I am trying to figure out how much it's going to cost me to put a compact on my son's '99 Giant TCR. Hopefully I can get away with using the same bottom bracket...
Thanks!
