Rust coming out of Rear Hub
Bought a used 1998 Trek 520. It has a silent hub. In October, I noticed rust coming out of the rear hub area, so I took most things off the bike and used frame saver. Now, the bike has a new 8 speed cassette, chain and the rear hub were re-greased and new crank and bottom bracket. Problem: The bike has about 50 miles on it since rebuild. I noticed that there is rust coming out on the drive side of the rear hub, small powdery stuff. And... the non-drive side has grease coming out from under the rubber cone. Should I be worried?? I hate to take it off the trainer, as I have only cycled about 10 miles on the trainer and if I take it off, I doubt I will ride again until spring.

When you say rust is coming out of the "rear hub area," are you talking about the hub itself? or one of the holes near the rear dropout? Cause you say you framesaver'd the bike. I hope you didn't framesaver the inside of the hub. Framesaver should ONLY be used on the inside of the frame itself, nowhere else.
Did you repack the hub or did the LBS do it. If they did it I wonder if they thoroughly cleaned all the gunk out of the hub before putting new grease in... if they really packed it full of grease, small amounts of excess grease may be getting forced out as you ride. Also, try to minimize use of oil or wd-40 near the hub, it will degrade the grease and the grease will get soupy and leak out.

I took everything except the headset/fork off the bike. I cleaned and greased the rear and front hubs with marine grease. I may have used too much grease. Actually, they looked pretty good, but I went ahead and cleaned them and put new bearings in the hubs. The rust is visible on the shiny new cassette. When I get home, I'll look more closely to see where the rust is coming from.
