Best workstand under $100?

Looking for some opinions. I have checked out Performance and Nashbar, but am unsure of what might be of decent quality at that pricepoint. I have one bike now and am about to build another for the first time, after that it will be used for routine maintenance.

Thanks for any input.

I bought my Minoura (the RS5000 or maybe a previous incarnation) from Nashbar when they had them for $99. It's a very usable stand, but it's not real beefy. That's good if you will be moving it around, but don't plan on rethreading a bottom bracket in its grip. For basic home maintenance it's been a great tool. I also use Minoura's inexpensive wheel truing stand and have built multiple wheelsets. These tools are what they are - good for the price but not what your LBS uses.

Not sure what the price is, but I have a Park bolt-on clamp (without stand) that I attached to a 4x4 in my basement. It's solid, and if you can do a little fabrication yourself, you can get a really nice clamp for less $.

I've used the Performance Spin Doctor II for a half dozen wheel builds and honestly don't believe a more expensive stand would have made a significant difference in either the time it takes to tension and true, or the truing accuracy of the wheels.

Think the Spin Doctor stands are made by Minoura. If you can use a bench mounted stand, the Minoura B3000 is a good space and money saver. AE Bike had them.

I may have misunderstood, thinking you meant truing stand. Sorry.

For a workstand, I splurged and bought the Spin Doctor Pro G3. Pricey, but really nice.

^Yeah - I'll second the G3 - that's a nice stand. The one that they often sell for $80 is really crappy compared to the G3.

+2 for the Spin Doctor G3, it's a very sturdy stand. I noticed it's $159.99 right now, they had it on sale for $139.99 for a very long time. Might be worth keeping an eye on it for the lower price-

Its is my personal opinion but why not save up more money and buy a nicer stand? You usually only need to buy a stand once since I doubt it would ever break.

It works great and you definitely can't beat the price

Only problem for me is that I can't work on my tandem with it but for 40 dollars thats asking a little too much

It's a wife justification kind of thing! Other than that, I would prefer to spend extra money on parts, the tools I need and/or the next build project assuming all goes well with this one

Wondermutt...

Besides the 20% coupon, what rebate did you use on the Ultimate stand?

Bought a Nashbar stand for $70.00 plus shipping, last week. I was pleasantly surprised at how sturdy and heavy it is. Should last a duffer like me a good long time.

Yep. Lots. Works for me all the time. I see no reason to have anything else.

jpb006, I used my "dividend" on lasts years purchases at REI. It amounted to about $91. The 20 percent is only for REI members too. In hindsight, my post didn't really help. But I believe in getting as good a repair stand as you can get....it should last forever.

I got Spin Doctor Team Workstand about a year ago. I'm using it for routine maintenance and tune-ups. The stand is stable and doen't take much space when folded.

On the "nice" vs. "not quite as nice" workstand front: I don't really see a reason to shell out big $$ for a workstand. As long as the clamp does the job, you would have to do a lot of wrenching to see the difference. I think the Nashbar / Performance budget models are more than adequate for the job.

I bought a Park PCS-9. I had to use my dremel tool and bench vise to resolve a few disappointing manufacturing defects, specifically brazing splatter, a base tube too long for its plastic insert sleeve, and a too-wide base leg support, but I have been very satisfied with the unit's utility and convenient storability (critical in my case). Given Park's reputation and the high quality of the paint and all of the other parts, I am shocked that my malformed base unit made it past final inspection.

Spin Doctor Team Workstand is on sale right now at Performance for $70, regularly $130. I'm tempted to get it.
