Brake Adjustment

I looked in a search and couldn't find the info I'm looking for. I just put a Modolo Mach 3 brake with matching lever on the front of my Fuji track (Road safety in Detroit). How do I center and adjust the pull on the brake? It feels soft and pulls more on the non cable side. Also do I need to "brake in" the brakes? Thanks, this forum is great.

O boy side pulls...

3 ways to do this

1.) if it's slotted just behind the pivot bolt spring. Just use a cone wrench.

2.) There is a tool made by Weinmann that has 2 prongs you stick in each loop hole.

3.) Old School and the way I do it? Take a punch or Old Screwdriver and place it On the opposite side of the spring. The non draging side. "PUNCH IT" Start light and apply more until it moves. Hitting the lever after each punch.

Hint: Don't make your cable housing to short. Cause you will just be spinning your wheels

I think I see it, the "nut" the spring goes through has flat sides. Hold it with a wrench and center it with the spring action?

Larry,
I see you're in Detroit. If you have more problems consider checking out Back Alley Bikes ( https://backalleybikes.org/ ) they're a free community bike shop and lots of the volunteers ride fixed gears.

As for the brake adjustment, a cone wrench (very thing wrench used for adjusting hubs) will fit on the flats (of the thing with the spring in it like you saw) while the brake is mounted. You can just turn this to center the brake. If you don't have a cone wrench they're only a few bucks at a shop or head to Back Alley on a tuesday and use theirs.

Thanks for the link. I know the basics, like what a cone wrench is. I know enough to screw things up real bad I went to my LBS in New Baltimore and he hooked me up with some nice old Dia-Compe cable straps for this project and he told me to get everything on and he would show me how to set everything up. Great place.

The opposite to thePest's punch trick is to pull the spring out on the dragging side and lever it out further to balance out the spring action. Then put it back. Especially with levers without return springs (not sure if your Modolo's have this), this method will give you more positive return in the lever.
