Spoke nipple came off, Why?
In the middle of a 60 mile ride on Saturday I started hearing a rattling. When I got home I saw that one of my spoke nipples was gone. I fished it out of the wheel and put things back together. I think I trued the wheel OK, first time I've ever done that. What would cause this to happen? Could riding over a curb have something to do with it or what?

When you trued the wheel did you loosen many spokes to bring it in true? The wheel may have been under tensioned to begin with allowing road vibrations to loosen the nipple the rest of the way off.

It just happens over time. This is basically covered in the previous posts.
Regular maintenence would have probably prevented this.
The positive side though is that there was evedently no harm done, you were able to fix it with zero money handed out, and you learned some about truing wheels, so all in all, probably a sort of positive experience.

Usually, at least in my experience, that's a sign of too little tension on the spoke, and likely the whole wheel.
