slipping gears when i pedal hard

my bike is slipping gears when i pedal hard. i cant seem to replicate the problem when i turn my bike upside down to work on it, so i'm hesitant to mess with the derailleur limit screws. anyone have any suggestions?

barrel adjuster?

Did you mess with the cable barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur?
If so, undo the change.

If not, please provide more information.

The limit screws will not help with skipping. Probably either excess chain and cog wear or a cable tension adjustment problem.

Please provide more details about the bike such as age, or at least how long the chain and other driveline components have been in service. My experience with slipping has always been related to excess wear, usually of the chainwheel or rear sprocket(s).

i dont think the cogs or the chain are too badly worn. also, i think this problem started after i let my idiot friend ride my bike. he was riding down a hill, and didnt know how to brake (!!!) and stopped the bike with his feet and maybe something else i didnt see. could this have done anything?

Are you sure the chain is shifting between gears and its not the freehub slipping (i.e., the pawls not engaging)? Does this happen just when you start pedaling?

Then does it slip in a specific gear?

When the chain slips does it stay on the same gear, or jump to a different gear? Does it happen on all the cogs or just the small ones?

Sounds to me like cahin and cassette ware. Did you recently change either? What happens is the the chain and cassette wear together. If youchange one and not the other you get amismatchthat will cause the slipage. I generally chnge my chain every 2000 miles and the chain and cassette every 4000 miles.

Hmmmm...I have been experiencing the same (sounding) type problem with a mtb with only a couple hundred miles on it. I never did bother to bring it in for the month and three month tuneups.

I experienced the same problem (or so it sounds) for a time whenever I would climb. Someone suggested lubing the bit under the bottom bracket that guides the cable to the rear derailleur. Apparently it has something to do with the frame flexing under hard pedaling and catching a bit of cable...? I don't actually know if this is possible, but I think it's worth giving it a shot at least before messing with something more complicated. It worked for me for a while (I soon went single speed with the bike).

You prob just need to align the rear sprocket with the derailler. When i first got my bike it was out of allignment and it was a 2 second fix. they used to slip between 2 gears.. just need to tighten the adjustment screw on the derailler

The hanger may be bent, This is a frequent occurrence and easily resolved.

If the chain hasn't been lubricated in a while, try lubing it.
