silicone oil
I just purchased a Fuji 50's style cruiser,it's built like a tank and weighs just as much,however being the 'ignoramus bicycilus' that I am I sprayed silicone oil on the chain and rear wheel hub.After a few minutes of biking this horrible grinding metal on metal sound started as I pedaled causing the the bike to freeze,is this because oil seeped into the foot brake which I beleive is similiar to a car drum brake?:irritated

The hub is supposed to packed with grease so that may be part of your problem. It is only a little like a car drum, It uses a screw gear and a set of beveled brakes to lever against a "drum"

Are you sure the chain isn't doubled-over/jammed in the derrailluer or between the chainrings/frame?
Take the wheel off the bike. Hold the wheel by the skewers and spin in.Does it spin freely? If yes, then it shouldn't be your hub. If the wheel won't budge, then you've got a problem, but I wouldn't think it was from the oil seaping in - Correct me if I'm wrong. Try spinning the cranks with the wheel off the bike. If they spin, then you know it's not them and that the chain isn't jammed between chainrings/frame.
Did you replace/repair anything around the drivetrain or brakes lately?
