Depending on your shifters you might not have enough positions to adjust the FD so that it does not rub, assuming you are using indexing. Others with more detailed info will want to know your setup, shifter model, FD model, in what gear combinations, etc.

If you are using friction shifting, you are not setting it up right or you have some type of alignment issue (FD, cranks/chainrings, frame).

Good luck.

If it's too far off the chainrings, you might want to adjust the height of your derailleur. But basically, with indexed front shifting (ex.: STI or Rapidfire), it's most likely that you have to favour only certain cogs. In other words:

– on the small chainring, you should be able to use the first 4-5 cogs without any rubbing;
– on the medium ring, you should be able to use the 6-7 centre ones;
– on the large ring, you should be able to use the last 6-7 ones.

If you can get more without rubbing, that's gravy.

Yeah, if you could give us more specifics we could probably help more.
On my 9-speed double I can use any combination of gears with no rub on the derailleur, no trimming necessary. Of course cross-chaining is not good.
With some trimming my wife can use all 9 cassette cogs from the middle chainring with no rubbing.
On my 10-speed double I can use 9 out of ten with no rubbing.

i find front dr adjusting a little funky sometimes, especially in bikes without barrel adjusters. usually its getting just the right combination of derailleur height, angle, and cable tension, but it can be a pain.
