Novice maintenance questions
I finally pulled my road bike of its hook in the garage where it has been ignored for around 4 years. After replacing the tires and tubes and giving it a once over, it appears to be in ok working order. Other then lubing the chain, what else should I be lubing and checking?
I am training for a MS-150 and will be doing rides 35-45 miles. How often do you need to lube the chain? After every ride? Also how often do I need to clean (degrease) and re-lube the chain? Any other things I should be doing regarding maintenance?
Any information and advice for this novice rider would be appreciated.
Saludos!

Unless it's a fixie I'd check my brakes first before I went out on a long ride. And you do not have to relube that often unless you're riding in the muck. I clean mine when it looks dirty (not often), relube once a month or so. Others on here think chain maintenance is a waste of time. Listen for noises from your hubs, crank, and headset on your test ride. You shouldn't hear or feel anything unususal. Check your brake and shifter cables for fraying - pull your levers and look inside, look next to the calipers, too. You may want to lube the housings if you feel friction. It sounds like you put in up in good shape, so you're probably good to go. Welcome back.

Tune-up = 1yr
Overhaul = 2yrs at most...
Tune-up
Spray lube all the pivot spots on derailleurs / Brake levers / down cable housing
Adjust Brakes / Derailleurs
New Pads in the rear.
Inspect or replace Rear Brake & Derail cables 4 sure
Oil Chain
Check:
a.) Headset play {Put front brake on rock forward & back}
b.) Front and Rear Wheel Cones for play
c.) Bottom Bracket
d.) Tighten any loose bolts Chainrings / Derailleur mounts / Brake lever & calipers, Shifters
Check seat is tight
Put front wheel between legs. Move Handlebars left/right {this checks stem bolt} Forward up&down { clamp bolt on stem}
==================
Overhaul means to regrease the bearings like it was NEW with LUBE.
Most hubs 6months to 1yr
Headset if not sealed no more then 2 years.
Bottom bracket {loose bearing = 6months-1yr} Cartridge 2yrs-15yrs
