Front Fork Preload Adjustment

Can someone explain preload adjustment to me? What are the knobs actually doing (mechanically and theoretically) when you turn them +/-. How do you know where it should be set? How do I set it for me (180lbs). Mine is set to however it came out of the box. I'm into tinkering and would like to mess around with it.
BTW - it's an RST Capa TL (stock on my Hardrock).
Thanks in advance for any tips.

If there are knobs on the top, turning them to right right will extend a piece downward pushing on the spring. This will make the fork stiffer.
