New compact crank cheaper than new chainrings?

I currently have a road double that has a BCD of 130mm, and 53 and 39 tooth rings. Would it be possible (and cost effective) to buy say, a 48 tooth chainring, and change the large ring out depending on what my needs are?

I guess that depends on what your needs are.

So, like, Salsa chainrings would fit the bill? https://www.salsacycles.com/chainrings.html

48/39 is more of a cyclocross crank. Meets my needs. (46/38 on my hybrid.)

That's exactly what I was thinking. It seems like too much work and money to spend $150 on a compact crank, and have to go through the trouble of swapping cranks and bottom brackets for when I want to go off road. Swapping cassettes is painless enough, and even removing the driveside crank for the purpose of changing a chainring seems like it would be easy enough to do.

The smallest ring that will fit is a 38t.

Shouldn't need to remove the crank to change rings.

They are easier to get a wrench on the bolts when the crank is off the bike. It's even easier to just swap the entire drive side intact. Just takes all the fun out of it though.
