Weird freewheel removal - aka off cursed freewheel

I'm trying to remove a freewheel from a 700c wheel. I ended up buying a Park FR-5G whose splines fit the freewheel pattern. That's when it got strange...
I spent a few minutes tightening the freewheel by mistake - duh. Why? Because that's the only direction the freewheel resisted with the socket installed. After a few tries I put my other 4-spline socket on another handy wheel and notice the freewheel locked in both directions clockwise, and [desired] counterclockwise.
Checking the recalcitrant freewheel I noticed the entire freewheel, including the center portion that is immobile on the comparison wheel, rotates when moving counterclockwise.
Is this some trick?

looks like an octopus mawl

It is not a freewheel but is a cassette hub. You need a chain whip to hold the cassette while you remove the lock ring. Roger

I have a chain whip in my tool kit. Does it hold the cassette steady while I use that FR-5G socket?

edit - I had some fun [and probable incorrect use of a chain whip]. Apart from perhaps bending the large cog I don't think I made any progress. Is there any service I can do on this beast without removing the cassette? I don't like the idea of a wheel I cannot maintain.

edit #2 - took it to the LBS and they broke their chain whip.

Is there any service you need to do that requires removing the cassette, other than putting on a new cassette? Anything else you can do around the cassette - truing, repacking, etc.

I can't imagine how to repack the cassette side - especially if it has loose bearings.
