11-23 to 12-27 longer chain?

I have two wheelsets. One has a 11-23 cassette and the other I just purchased and would like to put on a 12-27 for a couple of ultra hilly rides this summer. When switching between wheelsets will I also need to switch the chain to a longer one for the 27 tooth cog? I run a compact FSA crankset. Thanks in advance.

If your chain was properly sized you should have no problem. I've swapped between race wheels with 11-21 and mountain climbing wheels with 12-28 with no ill-effects.

Actually, if the chain is "properly sized" for the larger cassette, there will be no problem. If it is "properly sized" for the smaller cassette, however, it is likely to be too short for the larger one.

I dunno who made "capwater's" but the one on my Hetchins is a modified Shimano. I started with a 12-23 Ultegra 9-speed cassette. I removed the 16 tooth and stuck a 28 on the end.

The only way to find out if its going to work is by trying it. Your chain can be properly sized for the smaller casstte and still work for the larger cassette. Its relative to your rear derailleur as well.

I run an 11-21? on my road mtn.wheels a 13-26? on my trail wheels.

Capwater does!

You can get a lot of funky combinations with a pulled apart MTB cassette. I took the 28 off and plopped it onto a SRAM 12-26 and removed one lower gear. I've also done the same with 13-25s to keep the 16 gear around by yanking off the 14. We roll out in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where you hit a climb after a mere 90 miles where I'll use every bit of a 39-28 combo just to be moving fast enough to avoid toppling over!

Break the mold, experiment with bikes!
