question about 8 speed gearing / sti shifters

I recently picked up a used road frame for my girlfriend. She is riding an old ross 10 speed that is really heavy so I wanted to get her something lighter so there is less *****ing. This new frame has shimano 600 components on it and an 8 speed deraileur so I guess it needs an 8 speed wheel?

My question is will the wheel from the ross 10 speed (I think there are only 5 sprockets in the freewheel) be ok in the shimano 600 8 speed derailleur?

The seller wanted an extra $100 for both STI shifters and I didn't think it was worth it so I figure I'll take the downtube shifter from the ross 10 speed and put it on there? Or would I be better off paying the 100 for the shifters? I was trying to keep this cheap

Any advice is appreciated.

hmm, you can just use the limit screw to stop it from shifting any farther.

.
The derailleur is the least of your worries. The rear wheel off the Ross has different axle spacing (<130mm), different diameter (27" vs 700c) and probably different axle diameter too (3/8" vs 10mm). It's not really compatable.

Shifters are likely a no-go either. Do they clamp on to the down tube or stem of the Ross - or do they screw into bosses brazed on to the down tube?
