Rohloff with 3 cross and 2 cross

2 Attachment(s)
I took my Rohloff hub to get built at the bike shop. They originally built it up 3 cross but I later checked in the manual that I need 2 cross. I asked them to redo it and got into a sort of tiff with them. Anyway, they redid it and didn't charge me for it but when I got it home, I realized that they only redid one side. So it's 3 cross on the drive side and 2 cross on the left. I'm sick of this already but I'm afraid that the spoke may cut too sharp of an angle on the 3 cross side. What do you think? Should I just ride it like this?

geez, talk about a hard time

well its not uncommon for rear wheels to be laced up one more x on the drive side though

whys the manual say you need 2 cross?

if your worried about how the spoke sits on the flange on the drive side....ill say it looks ok to me. ive built a decent amount of wheels and seen agles like that before

wait for more responses though...i could be wrong

"All rims larger than 24" must be laced in a two cross pattern." Rohloff manual p.55. On the 3 cross side almost 2 cm of the spoke sits over the flange. Looking at it from the rim I can see the spoke laying on the edge of the flange and bulging up a bit like it's pulling the head of the spoke out. Spoke doesn't sit on the flange at all on the 2 cross side. If that's seems normal with you folks, I'm gonna rock and roll with how it is now.

I'd bite the bullet.

You paid more for that hub than lots of people pay for their whole bicycle. That deserves a proper, no compromise, wheelbuild job. If, every time you look at the bike the wheelbuild causes you to worry or wonder or just affects your serenity, it wouldn't be worth it to me.

No mechanic likes come backs. Second come backs are even worse. But dammit, it's their fault. You paid for a good job and you got a build that has you wondering if it's OK.

I have angles more evil on my 4 cross laced nexus wheel.

This is a dangerous thing to suggest but maybe you should just relace the thing on your own...

I've built wheels before; it's a pain and I got a great deal on labor. They probably gave it to the 15 y/o new kid to build though. I measured the differences in spoke lengths and going from 3 cross to 2 cross is a distance of over 1 cm. I'm gonna need new spokes, otherwise, I probably would have done it already. I just think its shady to a half job thinking I wouldn't notice.

^^^^
what the bike shop would probably do is cut the spokes. they have machines that ill cut the spokes and rethread them.

but yea, just go back and show them the manual and shrug at them(sarcasm)....if they werent handing off jobs to eachother left and right maybe information wouldnt get lost like it did

good luck with getting it relaced....id suggets to go back and ask them to relace it
