newbie to bikes in need of direction!!!!

hey people, i just got a couple of bikes and would like to know where i can find out more about general mechanics, something like a glossary/encyclopedia. i dont even know what a derailur really is! just trying to fix these bikes up, they might be worth some money..... thank you!
