Tightening Derrailleur Clamp on Aluminum Frame
I've always owned steel frame bikes up until my Trek 990 frame cracked recently and Trek gave me an aluminum replacement frame. Just how paranoid does one need to be about overtightening the front derraillleur clamp pinch bolt? I undertightened it when I first installed it and the derrailleur came loose during a hard shift and turned at a right angle to the chain rings. After that, I positioned it properly on the frame tube and tightened it a little harder this time but am still a little afraid of overtightening the clamp and damaging the frame. Is this a legitimate concern?

You might damage the paint. You won't damage the frame.

Most likely, you will break the clamp bolt before damaging the frame. I've broken several...never hurt the frame.
