26 Inner on an Ultegra Triple??
Hi,
I'm considering an Ultegra Triple 10-speed setup for my new road bike (30/39/52) and was wondering if it would create any problems if I replaced the 30-tooth ring with a 26 (i.e., didn't know if the jump from 26 to 39 was too much). Anyhow, the reason I'm even considering this is because if I end up loading the bike up for a periodic tour and there are some big hills, I'll probably want some lower gearing.
Thanks for your help/advice.

It would be best if you went for the larger cassette. You can put up to a 34 rear cog on the cassette and go with a MTB LX Derailleur and the combination will work well with the STI shifters. See Sheldon Brown's website. I recommended that to a neighbor who went on a long mountainous tour and he loved the setup. I think that the FD would not allow for that small a chainring in combination with a 52 tooth large ring. Good luck.

The bolt circle for the inner ring on Ultegra cranks is a very standard 74 mm and will accept down to a 24T chainring. I've substituted 26T chaingings for the stock 30T on at least a dozen 7,8 and 9-speed Shimano 105 and Ultegra cranks and they have all worked fine.
The only Shimano triple crank that won't take a ring smaller than 30T is the 9-speed Dura Ace which has a unique BCD.
