Ok.. here's the deal. I keep getting flats from thorns. I'm using WTB Nanoraptors, thorn-resistant tubes and tuffy strips. Doesn't matter.. still have a flat every freaking morning after a good ride. The thorns are penetrating everything. New day, new thorn, new tube.

I originally wanted a good road/off-road tire and the WTB Nanoraptor was PERFECT. ..but perhaps too soft.

My riding buddy has piece of crap Wal-Mart dime-a-dozen knobbys and hasn't had a flat yet...and we ride in the same places.

Can you guys/gals give me a good recommendation on a tire..I guess I can sacrifice a bit of road-friendlyness.. but I need something that's hard, tough, mean, fearless and full of zeal and vigor.

So... what size are you looking for? Looks like you're talking about 26" tires, but you should specify that.

If I'm wrong and you're looking for 700C tires, I highly recommend the 32mm Panaracer UrbanMax tires. Heavier than the thin 28mm tires I was used to, but I got the Panaracers almost a year ago and haven't had a single flat since (used to be 1-2 per month). They're about $20/each from Performance.

Are you sure that you've dug all of the old thorns out of your tires? It's possible to have one or two old thorns hiding in your tires and puncturing your new tubes.

This is the best $60 or so you'll ever spend if you use your bike primarily off road. I've used the system for nearly five years, thousands of off road miles, and NEVER had a flat with it. The system allows you to use standard rims and tires, and in using the items that come with the kit you don't use inner tubes. You can run crazy-low tire pressure if you like without worry of pinch flats also. It's a truly great product for mountain biking, much less expensive (and lighter weight) than UST, and you have a better selection of tires (because you use standard tires!). I'm currently running Mavic X517 rims with WTB Mutanoraptors-

Yup.. it's a 26" wheel. sorry.. i forgot to mention that. And yup.. It's always a "new" thorn.. Im careful to remove all the old stuff

You can even put the Stan's sealant in inner tubes, as long as you use tubes with removable valve cores. I believe Continental tubes have removable cores. I'm telling you, tires with Stan's sealant in them laugh at thorns-

Specialized Nimbus Armadillo's, get the 1.5 inch ones and you'll get fantastic puncture protection and speed. I have had these for ages, and very rarley get a punture, maybe 1 in the last 7 or 8 months.

+1. Armadillo's and proper tire pressure will help you out big time. They're a bit heavy, but shouldn't matter for the "commuter." I ride on Specialized "Mondo's," love 'em.

I used to have the same complaint. Stan's No Tubes works for me.
