Indexed derailleur with friction shifters

A friend of mine has an Ultegra 9spd rear derailleur he's looking to get rid of, and I was wondering if it's possible for this to work with my oldskool Shimano 600 Arabesque 6-spd rear freewheel. The original derailleur was busted, so its got a cheapie replacement on there now, and if it's possible to get this to work, i'd be able to pick up the derailleur for fairly cheap.
