    surly lht- alex adventurer rims: good rim choice?

    this research is for my girlfriend's new
    Surly LHT and I just want to ensure she really enjoys her bike
    (ordering in the frame to be built up by my LBS next wk)
    ...it will be the first real quality bike she's ever had and we're planning
    to do some touring this summer on it as well as next yr).

    First, I'm trying to decide if those stock Alex Adventurer
    rims are good quality or should I swap
    em out for other rims?
    More specifically, i'm looking
    for a great quality rim that is versatile, i,e
    lightweight for fast commuting/randonneuring
    but also rugged enough to hold its own during offroad
    firetrail riding and loaded touring.

    I'm also looking at swapping out the brakes to either shimano
    br550 cantis (as well as the saddle...won't be leather just yet).

    as per the bars, i'll probably give her a pair of nitto noodles
    ...or trekking bars (she likes a more ''upright position'')

    but back to the stock components, esp rims and bottom bracket and
    ritchey comp headset: are these very good products to keep as stock?

    Joe your Rivendell is gorgeous. It is so much nicer than most of the cookie cutter Aluminum bikes available today.

    The Surly is a real nice bike also. The only problem with Surly's is the threadless stem. There is something very unelegant about that 1 1/8" stem. Check out Richard Sach's site. He paints the stems to match his frames. They're still ugly but better than a stock threadless stem. I'm not cracking you. There just isn't much, if any, of a selection of 1 1/8" quill stems available. The only ones I've seen are TIG welded MTB stems. They're not too pretty either. Nothing beats a nice forged 1" quill stem for sheer beauty.

    How do you like the Honjo fenders on the Rivendell? Were they hard to mount? I've always wanted a set of them. Great bikes keep up the good work.

    Mavic all the way mate, Alex rims are more renounced for their BMX rims and have had a bad name in the MTB world...Stick with the major companies within MTB such as Mavic, or Sun etc...Better value for money, and they know their stuff about MTB opposed to a company from the BMX scene...

    The rims will be fine. Alex Adventurers are plenty stout, and much better than lots of rims folks have toured on. Besides, the XT hubs on that wheelset would outlast any rim you put on there, so just use the rims and replace when they're worn out (Mavic A719 or Velocity Dyad seem to be the standard choice for touring).

    You should decide if you want trekking bars or drops before you touch the brakes. The Oryx that are on the bike are fine brakes in the meanwhile. If she decides to go with trekking bars, you'll need levers and could choose to go w/ XT V-brakes at that point, if you wanted.

    The Ritchey comp headset is fine. If properly adjusted, it'll last tens of thousands of miles without any problems. Same for the BB--the UN53 is an excellent cartridge BB, no reason to replace until it wears out.

    Bottom line: for the type of use you've indicated, don't stress about replacement parts--everything on the bike is suitable. Figure out the bars, dial in the fit, ride, and replace as needed. If you're going to change too many things, it would probably be more economical to buy the LHT frame and build it up w/ what you want.

    Replace the rims if/when they break. I don't think that there is any point in preempting it. Same goes for the other parts. Use the ones you aren't super excited about until the curtain falls on their service lives, and then get the ones you really wanted. Or just build it up from the frameset
    Rigida Sputnik rims are the current recommended touring rim in the UK. Sun Rhyno Lites are quite popular too.

    thanks for the compliment....no not hard to mount (honjos)
    as I'm lazy and had my mechanic do it all for me (full build out)

    hey my gal likes more upright riding...anyone tried flat with bar extenders
    and/or albatross bars on the LHT?
