Respacing steel MTB from 135mm > 120mm (Sheldon?)
I read Sheldon's info on it and understand the process. I have good reason for doing it. In the future I may need/want to put it back to 135mm however.
Is 15mm spacing (7.5mm on each dropout) too much?

Can you space the hub out? Is the axle wide enough? However a steel frame can handle a lot of bending before it is compromised.

rykoala- it's worth linking the earlier thread to this one.
Chuck: one of the two hubs he wants to use (the one being an S/A 3-speed internal-gear) can't be spaced out that far.
I don't think that it's smart to space the frame down to 120 and then space it out to 135 again. Repeated cold-working results in brittleness and eventually breakage.

120 mm hubs are generally designed for a chainline of about 42 mm, but the _fronts_ of the chainstays on mountain bikes are wide for tire clearance, and generally will prevent installing anything but a pretty small chainring that close in. There may also be issues of crank-end/chainstay clearance.
That's why singlespeed mountain bikes generally use about a 52 mm chainline.

Ah yes. But if he were using a hub that could be spaced he could also space to meet chainline and redish. Tho it looks like he wants to use an internal hub(seems to me they have some odd spacing, 117 etc) so you could still space the frame to improve the chainline and dish the wheel offset(Like some dirt jump bikes) But then you might not want to bend it back because you would be tweeking it pretty hard.

Thanks for the info guys! Yes I'm using a SA 3 speed hub, 118.8 spacing. I've run a 42mm chainline with my 48t chainring (a biopace even!) so I know that won't be a problem. I am pretty sure I don't like the idea of bending it that far. Looks like I'm going to have to ebay the hub. Bummer!
Edit: I don't mind bending it in that far, but I really hate the idea of not bending it back. First craigslist, then ebay, for the hub and accessories.
