I lucked into a free Kestrel 200 sc on Friday. It has downtube shifters that I believe are friction - it needs some work and wheels, but the carbon frame is mint, so I haven't ridden it yet - and a friend mentioned a product that could move the shifters up onto the bars. He can't remember the name of the product, and I can't find anything on it. So, I thought I'd turn to this collective body.

It's possible that your friend was thinking of Paul's Thumbies:

Once on that page you will need to click on "Thumb Shifters" on the left side menu.

These are designed specifically to work with Shimano bar end shifters and will not necessarily work with your down tube shifters (but, they may). You should contact Paul's Component Engineering and check.

Kelly Take-Offs are almost certainly what you were told about. I have them on an older Trek with 7-speed indexed shifters and they are the next best thing to STI/Ergo shifters.

Unfortunately Chris Kelly went out of business about a year ago and closed out all of his products, including the Take-Offs. I don't know if the Liquidator still has them available or if anyone else has picked up the product.

Bar Ends will work nicely too. Or were you wanting to convert to STI?

Bar ends are an interesting approach as well. I missed that whole phase of shifters. I'd like to move to index shifing eventually on this "rain bike" but it might have to wait awhile. I'm not sure what era these Shimano 600's are from. If they do have index capability, I might go for a brifter approach if I can find a decent 7 speed set-up.

Due to an accident I had 5 weeks ago, the type of index shifting the Sora, I believe, has, shifting with the thumb tab on the inside of the hoods would be very difficult.

Hey, my roommate no longer uses his Take Offs, as he converted to SS, and he wondered if you would want them for $25 shipped. He doesn't need them anymore and was going to swap them at a bike shop, but he/we have way too much to swap. PM me if interested... I should make him join BF so you can just talk to him.

Anyways they are in pretty good condition - used, but not trashed or damaged in anyway. He said if you wanted he could take pictures.
