Need Advice on a cheap shifter...

Hey all,

My shifter for my rear derailer went on the blink again today... I got home and tore it appart, and the tension spring (see pic) was not strong enough to push the pawl past a little bit of gunk... I realy just need this bike to get me through this summer.... Any sudgestions on a replacement shifter... I like the click to shift kind... I've seen some used on E-bay, but am not sure what kind to get...Anyone know where I can just get a new spring???

TIA
Billy

What I have....

And the problem...

Can't you just flush out the gunk?

I'm not sure you can just get a new spring as far as I know, but you can go ebaying for someone selling the same exact shifter "as is, for parts" for really cheap and cannibalize that one.

Its a two-fold problem... The grease from 1994 turned to sludge...and the spring is weak... I cleaned it up, but a weeks worth of riding gets enough gunk in there to make it sticky again.... Oh well... If I just have to clean it out every other week, its no big deal...

Thanks
Billy

Low-end group components don't often show up on eBay, so set up a Favorite Search with e-mail notification and wait. Also try to determine what other shifters might work on the same bike and add them to the search.

This is a friction shifter or index? How many speeds (cogs on the rear cassette)?

Got $30 for both shifters and cables?

Note that the Alivio shifts with thumb/index rather than Altus' thumb/thumb.
