Allen key/wrench 4.5 mm**********?

I just got a sweet new (old) bike, and would like to raise my seat post. The bolt looks like it would just fit an allen key, but 4mm is too small to catch and turn it, and 5mm is too big. When I put in a 4.5mm screwdriver, I nearly stripped it, but it looked like it fit.

What is going on here? Is it a foreign sizing issue or something? I have four or five allen key sets, and none of them have a 4.5mm.

Perhaps it's an SAE size.....not metric.

It's probably a 3/16" bolt. Is it an English bike?

3/16" = 4.776 mm (approx).

3/16" = 4.75mm, might buy one of these to avoid a second trip.

edit: cooker's good and too fast for me
