Shimano brifters - reach adjustment ideas???

Calling all MacGyvers and other mechanical geniuses :
Anyone have an idea on what and how to use, in order to make a shim like the Specialized SlimShim, in order to shorten the reach on Tiagra brifters?

Edit : Namely, has anyone heard of a way to do this with a paperclip? I read about it somewhere, but can't find the "instructions".

Rubber gasket material in whatever thickness you need could be cut to fit and probably contact-cemented in place.

BTW, Shimano makes specific short reach STI levers at the Ultegra level.

the paperclip idea was suggested by grant peterson of rivendell, but of with them this was intended for regular old aero levers. i think there's too much going on inside brifters for this to work.

I got a kick out of this. I remember when "regular old levers" had the cables sticking out the tops and aero levers were brand new and the latest thing. I guess I've been at this a while.

Fidel, it sounds like your horse is already out of the barn, but Shimano makes STI shifters specifically for people that want a shorter reach:

https://bike.shimano.com/catalog/cycl...=1178677337891

These brifters come with two sets of rubber shims for people with small hands.

You may want to consider swapping out to these shifters and selling off your present shifters on eBay.

I don't see any difference between these factory shims and the old slice-of-rubber trick except that the factory ones imitate the leading edge of the brifter and look pretty, while homemade ones leave a gap.

If you do just use homemade slices, I recommend gluing inside the hood rather on the top of the lever.

the newer tiagra brifters also come with shims. if you cut off the 'tangs, and superglue them to the brifter, they will work on at least some of the older tiagra brifters (2006 models for example). this is from my LBS, as i have the same issue. seaching for the shims - most shops have some laying around that were not used in a given installation. dont seem to be available seperatly, they come in the box with the brifter set. ultegra shims are the wrong shape got tiagra brifters.
