When I take off my bike's Shimano XT 32-tooth, 4 arm chain ring, can I replace it with any other 32-tooth, 4-arm chain ring?

I believe all 4 arm chain rings are 104mm bolt circle diameter. Shimano likes to change things every once in a while so that nobody else can use their stuff. That's why we have such a wonderful array of chainring bolt circles. Stupid Shimano!

I'd like to know why one more bolt equals double the price on chainrings?? I can buy an entire new crankset from Nashbar cheaper than buying a set of three 5 hole rings from any local LBS?,,,,BD

There are some small differences in the Shimano four bolt 104bcd chainrings, that prevent them from all interchanging. The differences, are in the ID of the chainring arms and the profile of the teeth V/S the mounting point. Just be sure to check for compatibility. If you buy from a shop QBP should list the fit based on the crank model number. If you order online you can return them until you get one that works

Thanks for the replies folks. I ordered one from the web, but still hasn't arrived yet, and I want to go on tour tomorrow, so today I'm gonna remove the ring and go to all 6 bike shops in town until I find one that will work.

After some digging, it appears that XTR is different. There is an AA and an AB inner chainring. The AA is for 24 tooth inners and the AB is for 22 (or vice versa ) Bikeman lists a whole separate page for XTR specific stuff with some really funky bolt circle numbers. As long as you don't have XTR, I think you'll be okay.

Stupid Shimano!
