Is my early/mid 80's univega w/full dura ace worth swapping frames?
Some of you might remember the Univega that I scored for $13 that has full dura ace components. Its early/mid 80's model. The size is much to large for me (61cm). My question is this - instead of trying to sell this, is it worth finding a frame to swap the components to? Its a ten speed. Friction shifters. How hard would it be to find a frame that would match up with the components? I would really like it as a back up bike, retro parts, some cool to have around, but still kicks some butt.
Nikos; those DuraAce (600?) friction components are very reliable units-if yours are in excellent shape. I think you could find a frame fairly easily to swap to, almost any frame would work; then you could sell the old frame. But this could be more work than it's worth-but that may be the fun of it!! Also the 5 speed freewheel could be upgraded to either a 6 or 7 and Shimano makes the 7 I know of and maybe the 6 yet; the 7 would obviously make your bike into a 14 speed-not a bad upgrade for under $30. You may either have to spread the rear dropouts a little in a worse case situation, but all I had to do with mine was to redish the rear wheel a tad.
