Front derailleur adjustment

Sorry, I know I should research this but I'm a little lazy.

Front crank with 3 chainrings. On the middle chainring, the chain is rubbing on the front derailleur cage when the chain is on the smallest rear sprocket.

I see two screws on the front derailleur. How do I adjust them to get the cage to move outward and stop the rubbing? Or is this a cable adjustment?

The adjustment may be a little difficult because I have large mountain gears on my road bike. (It's very cool; you should try it.)

Thank you!

Not designed to cross the chain that much. On middle rings on front you should be in middle rings on back.
For derailleur adjustment see this link .

But your bike will not handle crossing the chain this much

Applesauce. The middle ring should be able to access the entire rear cluster. You want to stay in the higher gears in the big ring, and the lower gears in the granny, but the middle should have full reach

I agree, Raiyn. I've used that combination a million times. Never had a problem until just recently. Perhaps my cable has loosened up?

You could try the barrel adjuster.

What component group, specifically which shifters? Modern Shimano triple road shifters have four main positions plus extra trim positions. If this is what you have there should be two positions for the middle chainring, to the left and to the right of the middle ring. Use the right one to avoid chainrub when the chain is on the extreme right side of the cassette. Increasing the cable tension a bit may help.

The limit screws on the derailleur are there to keep the chain from dropping, once properly set they should need no further adjustments.

Not entirely true. On some triple set-ups. There is something called "trim". If when shifting you feel an extra click in the shifter. example. if you're on the large chainring and you upshiftthe front fully and feel 2 clicks instead of one, then your shifter has the "trim" feature. (not all triples have this feature). If you have this feature, when on the middle chainring the trim feature allows you to have little to no chain rub. If you up shift with both clicks, when you later hit uphill terain you can down shift the front shifter 1 click. This will allow you to be on the large gears in the back without chainrub. when you speed up after the hill you can single shift up the front to stop chainrub when using the small gears in the back.

I agree the setup should be such that the entire cluster is do-able from the middle ring without chain rub on the FD. But I do think it's best not to use the extreme smallest cog and extreme largest cog when in the middle ring. The chain's at quite an angle, which ain't good-
