Rim and tire combo hell

I'm really good at flat fixing. Really. Road bike, Mtn. bike. I just do it.
BUT
My wife's bike is killing me. I can hardly get the tire on and off. It takes forever and hurts!

So, do you wise ones think it's the tire, the rim, or the combo.

Rim: Ritchey Rock Comp
Tire: Spcialized Dirt Control 26x1.9

Do you know if either of these are "odd" sized or known problems? I'd be happy to swap the tires, but don't want to get rims....

Hints??

might be the size of the wall of the rim....but i think your best bet is not to guess. go to a store and with the rim and see what goes on easier

try using soap to put the tyre back on...maybe that ill make it easier so you dont have to spend money

Although I doubt you could get a too small tire onto a rim even with tools and sweat, I'll reference this from Sheldon where you can see 26">26"~26". Wonderful tire sizing systems. https://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

Do you have another 26" tire at home? Maybe on one of your bikes? If so, then try it. If not, then buy a new one, or take the wheel to your LBS and try a few before you buy.

I do have a 26 mtn tire I'm not using. I'll try it on her bike. I just HATE to go through that on/off with her wheel again. I'm not kidding about how hard it is.

I'm not sure about the soap suggestion. Does that mean clean the rim, or put soap in the tire or rim, or what?

It means to use soap and water as a lubricant during the mounting of the tire. Automotive tire shops do this all the time, you can watch the tire mounter slop some liquid onto the tire bead just before mounting it.
