shifter cable

so the other night in a rampage i decided to take all the paint off my road bike with a wire wheel and didn't want to take all the parts off. needless to say i accidentally cut my rear derailleur cable. it is a shimano 105 downtube shifter to a shimano 600 derailleur for a 600 7 speed hub. Now i'm kind of sure i know how to adjust the derailleur but how do i know how tight the cable needs to be or if i need to worry about that at all.
Thanks.

Smoking carpet perhaps? Missed last few doses of meds?
Impulse control disorder of some type. Non functional
derailler is standard equipment on urban assault vehicles.

Didn't you think a wire wheel might damage the chrome?
