How to remove old bar end shifters?
Hi,
I have a '71 Nishiki Semi-Pro that I'm trying to get the bar end shifters off of the handlebars. I've removed the lever, and have tried to get the allen bolt to turn, but it is extremely tight. Are they reverse threaded? I just can't seem to get them to budge at all!
Thanks!
Kyle

The threads are not reverse-threaded.
However, because of the design (screwing the bolt in loosens the mechanism) it is functionally reverse-threaded.
So to loosen the retention mechanism, you need to turn the allen-bolt clockwise.
Be careful not to strip it out. I had a case where the steel allen-bolt was pretty well frozen inside the aluminum body. Had to use a vice-grips to just twist the body out of the handlebar, then gripped the body in a bench-mounted vice and used the vice-grips to loosen the bolt from the body. Hopefully you won't have to deal with anything like that.
