Replacing bashring with chainring.
I'm looking into buying a new bike, specifically, the Iron Horse Sachem 3.0 (please, don't reference me to any other bikes, I wouldn't appreciate it). However, I notice that it has replaced the outer chain ring with a bashguard. While i may use the bashguard for the time being, I would like to have the option of slapping on a third ring onto the outside.
Could someone direct me to a good tutorial on how to install new individual chainrings/bashguards? For that matter, can all cranksets have their rings removed? I'm looking at a friends Iron Horse from about 4 years ago or so, the Flagstaff, and I can't see any basic way to remove them. Its there a special tool needed for the bolts?

I am not familiar with that bike at all, but I looked at some pictures and it looks like all you need to do it undo the four bolts holding the guard to the spider and replacing with a chainring.. a 5mm hex key perhaps..
If it is what I think it is, then you don't even need to take off the crank arm to do it.. just make sure the chain is on the granny gear.
Check out parktool.com and look at the repair help section.
And yes, for the most part all crank sets can have their rings removed with the exception being cheaper cranksets in which the rings are riveted to one another.
