what kind of lube and grease should i get?

what kind of lube and grease should i get for the chain, ballbearings in the wheelaxle (and what about parts of the bike needs something greased up or lubed?)

do i have to go with something bike specific and go to a bike shop to get it or can i get something general and it will still work fine? what do you guys recommend and for which parts?

Search the forums. It'll be far more productive than waiting for the same religious issues that get brought up every time this subject comes up.

Any oil, any grease. Motor oil is great, CV joint grease in convenient becaue it comes in a tube.

I prefer lard because you can cook with it too while on tour, or even bacon grease in a pinch.

I use Park PolyLube 1000 for bearings, NAPA White Lithium Grease for threads, and Triflow Oil for my chains, cables, etc.
