New crank compatability with existing BB question

I stripped the threads on my drive side crank where the pedal attaches. The threads are gone.

My bike is an 89 Schwinn Traveler with Shimano Exage components. Will something like this: https://www.chucksbikes.com/store/cr020.htm fit my existing square tapered bottom bracket?

If not how do I tell what will fit my existing BB?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, it will fit - all square taper interfaces are essentially the same (unless you're into vintage non-export Japanese bikes). That is, however, a road crank; your Exage is a mountain bike crank. The major difference is the size of the chain rings. The road crank will have bigger rings and be harder to pedal.

Would you prefer to replace what is broken, or do you want to change it and if so, how?

The better part of valor may be to have the threads repaired rather than replace the whole crankset.

Have you talked to your local bike shop about this?

It is on a road bike with 52/40 rings now.

I talked to the LBS and showed him my stripped part and he said it would be more cost effective to get a new one.

And didn't offer to sell you one? Considered a new LBS?

I'd go for the 105 cranks in your link. For $30, that looks like a good deal to me. I don't know if the ideal spindle length would be the same as for your current cranks or not; but worst case, you just buy a new 68mm English threaded square taper cartridge bottom bracket with the correct spindle length, they're not expensive. As for DMF's comment about the mountain bike cranks, Exage was available in both road and mtb versions. I've got an old Trek mtb with a full "Exage Mountain" group on it. I've also got Exage "aero" road brake levers on my old Schwinn road bike-

The Exage crank is low-line enough that repairing the pedal threads is not warranted. An NOS 105 or similar road crank is a much better choice from a cost standpoint.

First check to find out what spindle length is recommended for the new cranks and measure the length of yours. There is no consistency in the spindle length to chainline relationship among different cranks, even from the same maker. You could end up with the rings so far in or out that they aren't in the derailleurs operating range.

I sell cranks for a living and I see problems like this all the time.

How do I measure the spindle length on my existing BB (still installed)? I looked for numbers on the BB and didn't see anything other than Shimano stamped on it.

My crank arms are already off. Do I need to put them back on and measure the chainline?

Sorry for the basic questions, but I'm really confused.

Check your costings first and try a bikeshop with a proper workshop and repair equipment before committing to a new crankset.

A thread repair would be 1/3 the price of a cheap crankset and even cheaper getting up to the level of your exage.

If you go the route of crank replacement, use a caliper to measure your spindle length. Or just check Sheldon's database and buy a new BB. This is probably easiest, and you get all new everything down there for $25 more.

Guys,

Problem solved. The cranks in the previous link I posted were sold out. After looking around for used compatible ones, I decided to get out the phone book and start calling all LBSs in my city. I found one who put in a helicoil for $15.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
