Can an 8-Speed Chain Work with a 9 Speed Cassette and Vice Versa?

Note: I will be using friction manual shifters on both set ups. Not indexed.

9 speed chains will work both ways however the 8 speed chain will be too wide to work well on the tighter spaced nine speed cassette. Shifters don't matter when the spacings wrong
