Creaking noise from stem

Hi All
I've got this really irritating creaking noise coming from the stem, that i only hear when I stand on my pedals.
Any advice on eliminating that noise, should i use grease, foam, I dont know! LOL
Thanks a bunch for your help!
Mike

Have you tried tightening the bolts on the face plate?

The face plate screws could be stripped or just worn out, or the stem could be cracked or stripped. If you have a new stem try that first. Might be headset or forks.

Check things in this order:

1.Check your headset. Clean it, repack it and reassemble it.
2. Wipe down the area where the bars and stem attach to each other do a visual inspection looking for small cracks or any strange discolouration. If you don't find anything put it all back together.
3. Torque everything down to spec.
4. Go for a quick spin.

If you still get a creaking noise under load - DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

What kind of stem is it? Aluminium creaks like crazy just before failure. It could also be your bars ready to go. This is not a good sound. Do yourself a favour and find it before you go on an epic ride.

Good luck.

Creaking noises from the stem are pretty common and could be caused by nothing more than sweat buildup between the mating parts. I recommend taking the entire front end of your bike apart and inspecting everything for cracks/damage. Good time to service the headset as well. Assuming everything is okay, put it back together with clean grease and you should be good to go. I do this a couple times per year on my main bike and it goes pretty fast. Enjoy.

Thanks everyone, all great ideas. The bike is new from this year, and i replaced the stem a month ago. Sounds to me like I need to take it apart and do a serious lube job, then retighten.
Thanks everyone, this should work.

+1 if the stem and bar are alloy and not carbon. Had this on my Jamis. A very(I mean very) light layer of grease between the bar and stem should solve the problem.

I'm not a proponent of lube between the bars and stem - causes slipping. Just clean everything really well and assemble dry.
