Chain "rub" on rear cogs?

Chain "rub" on rear cogs?
I noticed today while backpedaling slowly, that the chain on my rear wheel (9 speeds) rubs against the inner cog right next to it (in particular gear settings). Occasionally this causes a "stutter." I wonder if this is the noise that I notice while pedaling on the road. How do I fix this? Is it a simple derailer adjustment where I simply loosen the high gear limiting screw?

This has nothing to do with your limit screws.
1. Is this only while you are crosschaining? If not, then:
2. May be that you have just a little too much cable tension. Turn the barrel adjuster clockwise just a little at a time and test, but first check for:
3. A bent or sticky chain link. Backpedal very slowly (by hand) in the small/small combination and a bent/sticky link will be visible as it runs over the rear cog and through the derailleur.

One more thing. When I'm in the big front, smallest back cog setup, the chain is rubbing against the right side of the front derailer. Is THIS a limit screw adjustment problem? Should I loosen the high gear screw? Thanks for all the info.

And in big front, small rear, this could be a limit screw issue. Can you push the front der over by hand? If not, then loosen your limit screw a little. If you can push it, then you need a little more cable tension.
