Gum wall tires

I recall coming across a link about these, but can't find it again. When do these need replacing? I think the gum walls are cracking, but it's hard to tell if it's the tube pushing out at those cracks or just just the gum material swelling out a bit. The tread looks ok, again cracking in that area; but it seems to be holding air.

Also: I think these tubes are 20 years old. They held air over night, at 50psi. Prudent to replace, or just wait for a hole?

Personally I would replace the tubes and the tires. If you want to be thrifty you could hold on to the tubes for emergency repairs...you know, to carry as a second extra or something.

I search Amazon.com for gumwalls ( or my LBS but yours might not carry them). There's a brand named Kenda that is $10 or less.

My LBS didn't have them in stock--I guess they sold their last pair just before I came in. Said to come back in a week, like when I pick up my other bike. I'm not hung up on it being gum wall or regular rubber; I just want reasonably smooth, for good road riding. Problem is, I guess 27x1 1/4 is an old size, so selection isn't great.

I use the Performance GT II, 27 X1 1/8 and 27 x 1 1/4 on older road bikes I acquire, some of which I resell. I've been satisfied with them, especially when I match the 27X 1 1/8 with alloy hooked bead rims. They're inexpensive (actually cost less than the Kendas when on sale) and have a pressure rating of 105 PSI and provide a nice ride. They have a Kevlar version that is available for $10 on sale and comes in the two sizes mentioned and a 27 X 1" that has a pressure rating of 110 or 115 PSI. I just purchased the Kevlar version for an old Raleigh Record I use as a winter bike.

the Kevlar tires are on sale right now!

I like those, also, because of the narrow width. I have found Kenda on sale for as low as $5.99 but only in 27X1 1/4.

Sheldon Brown has a good selection in 27 inch if you are seeking good quality. Also a great read...
