BB problem
I purchased a Klein Adroit frame just as they were going out of production. I selected all the parts I wanted the bike built from. I am not a bike mechanic nor do I claim to be. I handed my list of parts I wanted the bike built with and it was assembled. Phil Wood Hubs for the wheels, Race Face cranks on a Phil Wood Titanium BB. For six years the bike worked perfectly then recently I took it in for an overall tune because I was getting a knocking from the bottom bracket every so often. Then I get the phone call from the shop a few days after I drop it off "we need you to come in so we can explain what's wrong with your bike" They couldn't tell me over the phone. When I went in the mechanic had one of the cranks off and apparently they were not compatible with the BB and there was play in the BB around the frame. Since it's a Phil Wood hub they use a proprietary tool to remove the BB so the shop couldn't take it out at that time. So I'm waiting for that tool to come in and to see what the damages really are. As the shop was ordering the tool they noticed that the BB was not compatible with an aluminum frame and they even spoke with a Phil engineer and ovaling may have occurred around the BB.
So what I want to know is where does this leave me. I would like your opinions especially those of you who work in shops. Since I handed the shop (not the same place that found the problem) a list of parts I wanted my bike made from. Am I responsible? or should the mechanic who assembled the bike have known that the Phil Wood BB is not compatible with an aluminum frame? Once they get the BB out I will know what I'm dealing with, I'm just trying to prepare for it.
