Which Side Of A Shimano Chainring Faces Out?

I swapped the chainrings on my Elita crankset out for Shimano chainrings, but I didn't really think about how they should have gone on. Which side of the Shimano chainrings should face out?

the side with the recessed chainring bolt holes face out from the spider

You also need to line up the chain-drop pin with the crankarm, and the small ring oriented with the large one - but I'm not sure what markings are on yours to do that with.

Big ring tooth count stampings face out (right). All other Shimanos face left, toward frame.
