New Shadow rear mech

Hie there,

I'm running a Top Normal XT rear mech with a medium cage and am contemplating changing to the new Shadow low profile XT rear mech. I run a triple crank with my current setup and have been told that for the new Shadow mechs, the medium cage should only be used for one or two chainring cranks.

I run the short cage mech due to a few reasons, crisper (butt dyno) shifting and lower weight among them.

What are your views on this new mech and if I could use the medium cage Shadow with my triple? As to my knowledge, cage length only determines whats the largest cassette cog you can run.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Its actually the total amount of difference in teeth. IE: 22-32-42 crank gives you 20 and an 11-32 cassette is 21..so the mech must have a capacity of 41. Short cage will not have this capacity.

The "crisper" shifting of a short cage rear derailleur has to be minor or non-existant. However, a short cage rd can be used well out of it's wrap capacity by avoiding small-small combinations.
