shimano chains and cassettes
out of curiosity will a hg70 cassette which is listed as a 9sp work with a hg70 chain which is listed as a 6/7/8sp chain ?

No, a 6/7/8-speed chain is wider than the correct 9-speed chain. Get any Shimano or SRAM chain listed as 9-speed.

probably a well merited answer but that still seems to be a general answer of 9sp chain w/ 9sp cassette, I am asking specifically about the compatibility of hg70 parts regardless if it says 6-8 sp and the cassette is a 9 sp.

The "70" is a price point. Shimano makes chains and cassettes in "50", "70" and "90" series in increasing order of price and finish. All are interchangable if the width matches. So a HG50 9-speed chain can be used with an HG70 9-speed cassette. An HG70 9-speed cassette cannot be used with an HG70 8-speed chain.
Actually, Shimano's chains and cassettes are numbered as "5X", "7X" etc where the "X" varies with the number of cog the cassettes have and the chain width.

Some shop employees will tell you 90 is Dura Ace, 70 is Ultegra and 105, and 50 is everything below. That's not entirely correct, but it makes sense to people so they accept the answer. Truth is, 90 is a more expensive, probably lighter part. 50 is the budget model.

Everybody has their preferences, but I much prefer SRAM chains to Shimano. They come with a Powerlink connector link and from my experience they last longer than Shimano chains. Another good deal on nine speed chains is the "Nashbar nine speed chain by KMC," as Nashbar calls it. It comes with a connector link that works basically the same as the SRAM Powerlink, and it's usually on sale for a very good price. I've got one I put on a bike awhile back, seems to be a fine nine speed chain for a great price-

The Shimano (I use the HG73 105/LX level chain) takes more work to get that gritty sound out that you get when you laterally flex the chain.
