Larger inner ring on a compact crank

Hi-
I got a compact crank to be able to take big hills a little more easily earlier this season. I've been riding on more flat land lately, though, and would like to upgrade the 34 inner ring to a 38 or 39. I stopped by the shop today to order, but the tech wasn't sure if it would be a good idea (maybe compatibility issues? He's a junior tech at the shop and didn't want me to order unless we were sure it'd work.) I wouldn't expect any compatibility issues, but what do you all think?
TIA
Mike

There's no problem with this.
