'nother newbie question

That round piece of plastic guarding the cassette? the cassette guard? is loose and it makes the most irritating sound the whole time I'm biking. One of the little clips broke off and I can't figure out how to remove the cassette to put another one on. Is this something easily done or do I have to take it in to get it fixed?

if you dont know how to remove it , i would suggest to go to your local bike shop and ask them to do it , and watch how its done , then ask a few questions on how to do it . if they are a decent HELPFUL shop , it shouldnt be a prob to tell / teach you how to do it in the future and possibly you can buy the tool from them .
that is generally how it works .
but who knows , its a funny wourld out there
Cheers T

go to your LBS and pay them to do it, or just buy a cassette tool that fits yours,(your shop should have them, and they'll be able to tell you which one you'll need) remove the cassette, take off the plastic guard, grease the threads, and reattach your cassette.

My spoke protector disk broke a tab on me while I was riding to work 2 weeks ago and was making an aweful racket.
I just grabbed a pair of aviation snips from my toolbox and cut the thing off, when I replace the casette on my commuter come winter time, I'll put a new one on.

If you want to replace it, you'll need the tools to do it.

If you just want to take it off and not replace it, you can cut it off or heat a metal rod and cut (melt) through it.

That said, if you plan on not replacing it, I hope that your derailleur low limit screw is set up absolutely correctly. If you have no idea what I just said means, then I'd suggest replacing the protective disk.

I'd say LBS is your way to go. Too much work and tool investment for this one time to DIY.
