strange sound when I mash the pedals
recently when I stand up to mash on the pedals regardless of the speed or gear. I get a strange sound, almost like the chain is riding against the derailer? this just started to happen.
is this normal?

Possibly if it sounds like against der noise it might be it because of increased chain tension?
Raising bike up and mashing with your hand can give you an idea. I mean, what else could it be?

well, i put on my new pedals and still making the sound. I am now running power grip (kind of like toe clips) which puts my feet into a more constant contact with the pedal, problem is now that the sound is worse.
